Welcome to English Language Arts and Reading!

Hello! My name is Taylor Karl and I will be teaching 6th and 8th grade ELAR this year at Holland Middle School! I am also the middle school One Act Play director and the 6th and 8th grade Ready Writing and Editorial Writing coach for UIL.

This will be my second year to teach in my hometown. I attended HISD from kindergarten through my senior year and am ready to serve the students of our fantastic community. After high school, I attended Texas A&M University and earned my degree in History. Before teaching in Holland, I taught 7th grade Texas History at Killeen ISD.

In reading class, we will be working to improve our reading comprehension skills through a variety of strategies, explore many genres of literature, and increase our vocabulary skills. My goal is for my students to develop a love for reading and to become lifelong learners!

What are we learning?

For the next 3-5 weeks, students will be reading the novel Wonder by RJ Palacio. While reading this novel, we will study literary elements such as theme, conflict, characterization, mood, and setting. We will also reflect on the themes of friendship and kindness.

REMIND MESSAGING SYSTEM

6th grade parents/guardians,

I have set up a messaging system called Remind for all of my classes. This system lets me text message students to let them know about important information such as homework, tests, projects, school events, etc. I would also like to extend the invitation for you to join as well. This way you have a way to know what is going on in reading class. I am not making this system mandatory since I know that not all students have a cell phone, but I would encourage it if they do own one. My goal with this system is to help students and parents to stay up to date with what’s going on in the classroom. If you and your student would like to receive reading class updates, please text the message @mskarl6 to the number 81010. If you would prefer email updates, go to rmd.at/mskarl6. If you have any questions or trouble, please leave a message with the middle school office (254-657-2224) or email me at tkarl@hollandisd.org.
