Hi there!!  This is my 4th year at Holland Middle School and my 8th year in teaching.  I teach 7th grade math and 8th grade Algebra 1.  I am also a coach!  I coach volleyball, basketball, and track.  I graduated with my Associate of Science from Hill College in 1996, where I played volleyball and softball for the Lady Rebels.  I then graduated with my Bachelor of Science from Sam Houston State University in 1999, where I majored in Mathematics and minored in Kinesiology. Eat 'em up Kats!!

I have been happily married to Jeff Burton for 22 years.  We have three sons and one daughter. My oldest son graduated from Holland High School and is attending Ranger College where he plays baseball.  My middle son is a junior at Holland High, my youngest son is in eight grade at Holland Middle School, and my youngest child, and favorite daughter, is in seventh grade at Holland Middle School. ;-)

Please feel free to contact me at any time!  I am here to make math enjoyable for your child!

We have just finished up learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers!!

Binder Guidelines:

The student will have their binder divided into 5 sections: Table of Contents, Classwork, Homework, Tests/Quizzes, and Classroom Procedures

1)  The Table of Contents will have 3 pieces of paper labeled Classwork, Homework, and Tests/Quizzes.  You are expected to keep a running log of the papers you have worked in class.

2)  The Classwork/Notes will need to be in order as listed on your Table of Contents Classwork sheet.  First paper in the six weeks first and last paper last.

Tardies:  Tardy means not in your assigned seat when the bell rings.  If you are tardy, you will be marked as such on the attendance for the day.  The school policies are explained in the Parent/Student Handbook.

Absences:  Students that are absent are responsible for getting the work that they missed.  They will be given the same amount of time to complete the assignment that the class was given.  Please read the absence policy in the Parent/Student Handbook for more information.

Tutoring:  Students will need to set up a time for tutoring if they need it.  It is up to them to see me about it.  I am available in the morning at 7:00am-7:25am in the new gym.

Test Corrections:  Test corrections will be allowed only for students that fail a test.  They will be able to bring their grade up to a 70.  Test corrections will be due 2 days after the test is returned to the student.  I do not allow corrections to be done on homework assignments.

Progress Reports:  Grades will be available for parents to view online.  I will send out progress reports frequently for my class for students and parents to go over together, sign, and return for extra credit points.

Supplies:  Students need to have their binder, spiral, and pencils daily.  Students will only be allowed to use pencil in Math class.  I will not accept work completed in pen!  If work is in pen, there will be a 20 point deduction from the assignment.

Extra Credit:  I will be happy to give extra credit to any student.  It will be up to that student to ask me if they can have an extra assignment or replace an existing assignment.  These arrangements will need to be made with me by the fifth week of that six weeks.  No extra credit will be given out in the sixth week of any six weeks.  I also offer opportunity for extra credit points often.  It will be up to the students to take advantage of those opportunities!

Discipline Jar:  I will have a discipline jar in the classroom.  If a student uses unnecessary language in the classroom, they will need to bring a nickel to put in the jar.  I will use this money to pay for classroom pencils/paper/erasers.  If a student does not want to participate in the discipline jar, they will owe me 5 minutes of their time after school for their language AND they will not be able to use the classroom pencils.

Vocabulary:  There is a vocabulary assignment every six weeks.  This will count as a project/test grade and will be completed in the spiral notebook.  I will give the list of words at the beginning of each six weeks and it will be due during the 4th week each six weeks.  There is a three day window to turn in the assignment (Wed., Thurs., or Fri.).  THIS ASSIGNMENT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED LATE.

Binder:  There will be a binder grade given each six weeks.  This will count as a project/test grade.  The binder is expected to be kept organized and orderly.  I will go over the binder with the students.  This allows the students to have all work easily accessible for exams.  THIS ASSIGNMENT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED LATE.

Dropping Grades:  I may drop homework, class work, or warm-up grades at the end of the six weeks.  This policy does not apply to test grades.  This is not guaranteed.

Grade Breakdown

Daily Work             40%

  includes:  class work 12%, homework 18%, warm-ups 10%

 Assessments   60%                                                                                                                           includes:  tests 40%, quizzes 20%,

{vocabulary, projects, & binder (test grade)}

Late Work/Zero Policy GuidelinesI will not accept work later than one week after the assignment was due.  I will let students know when they have not turned in an assignment.  (Parents will be notified by a “M” in the grade book.)  There will be points taken off the assignment for every day it is late.  Ten points the first day, followed by 5 points every day after.  They best a student can make on the last day accepted will be a seventy.  Once a week has passed and a student has not turned the assignment in, they will receive a zero.  Keeping up with homework is very important in this class.  The students need to practice what they will be learning.  I will contact parents if homework is turned in late!
