Samantha Griffin

Welcome to my 4th grade math and AR classroom! I am starting my 11th year in education, and this will be my 1st year serving as a Holland Hornet! My whole family has come together! My husband of 17 years, Coach Griffin, will be the girls basketball coach. We have four children: Cali (10th grade), Payton (9th grade), Kyle (7th grade), and Devin (6th grade). We are all extremely excited about this new chapter in our family's lives! Thank you for being a part of this journey with us!!!

Math in Focus

This classroom structure will look a bit different this year. Students will be up communicating and collaborating to find errors and solutions. Lots of “thinking” will be the primary focus, and students making decisions on how they can demonstrate what they know. They will learn different strategies, but will only be assessed on solving problems…the way they get there!

AR Activities

This class period will be to support reading. Students will select, read, and test on AR books. They will also complete tasks to support comprehension by making connections to self, texts, and world. We will also work on their fluency and vocabulary. (Note: vocabulary will be the same words from reading class.)

WIN (What I Need)

This class will be treated as a lab where we will work on spiraling math skills throughout the entire school year. We will conduct “HORNET” “MATH”! These are station rotations to ensure we are progressing as well as retaining our skills. When students are in my WIN period, it will NOT be used to catch up on missing work… it will be strictly focused on math support. Students will have the opportunity to work on corrections during this time when permitted.

Class Expectations

As a 4th grade team, we teachers have identified common grounds for all students' behavior: Be responsible by having all materials (supplies and assignments) that will lead towards your success. Be respectful and polite to all people. Be independent and take ownership in your own learning. Be a problem solver and confident to think on your own. We are BRIGHT!

Homework

Students will come home with a choice board over the course of 3 weeks. My goal is to incorporate as much math as possible that we are currently working on to the real world supported by their parents! There will be further directions provided on Class DoJo each week to support these tasks.

Math Grades

Students will earn grades over the course of 9 weeks. Their average will consist of 60% minor grades and 40% major grades.

Minor Grades: class work, collaboration, and homework.

Major Grades: tests, projects, quizzes

Students will have the opportunity to make corrections for major grades only.

Class Dojo

This will be our first line of communication about school functions and events. I will also provide homework support and directions for both parents and students to watch to help assist throughout the year. Please contact me through this app first.

We are a BRIGHT bunch!!!
